Spanish Phrases That Can Help People Understand Your Abroad?

If you are someone who is fond of going places, then visiting foreign countries must be already part of your future itinerary. Most countries you will visit are not English speaking countries, and since Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, you will most likely meet a lot of Spanish speaking people. If you learn even just the common phrases that you will need on your travels, you will not have much difficulty being understood.

Here are some of the useful phrases that you will need when you are abroad, especially in a Spanish-speaking country.

In English, we say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ when asking for a favor and appreciating help. If you don’t want to be offensive to people, then it is important to learn their Spanish counterpart. The proper Spanish phrases are ‘por favor’ and ‘gracias’ for ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’ respectively. Good manners are always appreciated. Don’t forget your por favors and your graciases whenever you encounter people whom you need help from, or who have helped you in any way.

It is important to be able to locate your hotel fast. Say, ‘Donde este los hoteles?’ which means ‘Where are the hotels?’, if you want to ask that question. You can simply ask this question to any passerby and they will understand what you are asking for. They can help you with directions. And, don’t forget to say ‘gracias’ after.

If you are going to a place famous for beaches, then you should one day go to the beach. If you are not very familiar with the place, then you should ask for information from someone. Use this Spanish phrase ‘Que camino a la playa?’ which simply means ‘which way to the beach?’

When you enter a restaurant, make sure that you inform them of your strict dietary requirements if you have one. If you are allergic to nuts say ‘Soy al?rgico a las nueces.‘ If you are allergic to other food items, then just replace the phrase ‘to nuts’ in the statement. ‘Soy alergico a los maricos’ means that you are allergic to seafood. If you are allergic to dairy, you simply change the food to ‘la lecheria’; to soy use ‘las soja‘; to eggs, use ‘los huevos.’

If you want to say, ‘I am a vegetarian,’ say, ‘Soy vegetarian/a.’ It is important that you tell the restaurant staff about your requirements since most restaurants don’t include vegetarian dishes in their menu.

‘Donde esta la estacion de ferrocarrill mas cerca?’ is the question to ask if you are looking for the nearest train station. In many places in the world, you will find that traveling by train is common and convenient. This is by far the cheapest form of transportation so tourists should be able to learn how to go to the nearest railway station.
