1. Explore the Gippsland Wine region

One of the reasons Traralgon thrived into a busy town in the 19th century is because it sits within a rich wine region. Walking across Gippsland, all you can see is family-owned wineries and vineyards and boutiques.

Located just 15 minutes from the city center is Narkoogee in the slopes of the Great Dividing Range. Here you can enjoy the beautiful views of the Strzelecki Ranges as well as sampling some tasty wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Built in the late 1800s, the Gippsland Plains Railways used to connect Traralgon and Stratford and Maffra, but it was discontinued in the 1980s. Today, the tracks serve as a great greenway crossing stunning bridges and ridges.

Old Gippstown is like an open-air museum thanks to its more than 40 prehistoric buildings that narrate how the Europeans came to the region between 1850 and 1950. Here you can find settlers’ structures like schools, banks, waterwheel, a 19th-century prefab iron house, church, Masonic lodge, and a general store.

There are also plenty of antique pieces of furniture, documents, art, newspapers, books, machinery, tools, and more.

A Wall of Recognition shows a graphic history of immigration in the region and a list of migrated families that found a home in Gippsland. The park’s center features a statue of an immigrant holding a suitcase in one hand while using another to shield his face from Australia’s scorching sun.

Latrobe Regional Gallery is among the largest art spaces in eastern Victoria, featuring seven exhibition rooms and outdoor space for sculptures. The museum mainly features work by respected local artists along with interdisciplinary acts and shows.

There is also a gallery space dedicated to contemporary and international art, featuring Asian art, Impressionism, glassware, Australian post-war art, and Modernism.

7. Hang out at Wirilda Environment Park

If the main reason to come to Traralgon is to have a picnic, Wirilda Environment Park ticks all the boxes for a great picnic spot. It spans 100 hectares of reclaimed land with a river flowing nearby, making it a great cooling down spot.

The park also features some interesting hiking trails leading up the river, through Tyers Gorge, and then to the Moondarra Reservoir.

Launched in 1992, this garden was designed as an homage to Morwell’s centenary. It is home to over 3,500 rosebushes chosen from more than 400 traditional species.

The garden spans two hectares, and among other things, you can see include rugosas, floribunda, hybrid teas, tea roses, and others.

Morwell Centenary Rose Garden also has equipment such as gazebos and pergolas.

9. Take a trip to the Traralgon Railway Reservoir Conservation Reserve

This reservoir was created in 1883 to supply water for steam trains. Located south of the town, this 30 hectares reserve offers plenty of learning material concerning the European settlers and Gunaikurnai People.

It consists of wetlands, woodland, and grassland with the waters attracting aquatic plants such as lilies and birds, including ducks.

10. Drive to Morwell River Falls
