Round the World – Cape Town

With the year coming to a close, you might be thinking New Year, new you. Or perhaps, more likely, new year, new adventures to embark on! Whether you’re wanting to tick off your ever-increasing bucket list, visit friends and family, or are just plain nosy and want to know where we would go on the ultimate ‘Big Trip’.

We thought travel inspo couldn’t get much better than this, but we’ve been experimenting with a UK tech start up what3words.com, who are dividing the WHOLE word into 57 trillion 3m x 3m squares, and assigning each square a unique 3 word address.

Flinders Street Station? We think you mean decide.chair.tribe

bikes.audio.half? We’ll see you outside the London Eye.

A picture tells 47,727 miles of stories. A film highlights it in 120 seconds. We sum in up in three words…

First stop, milky.happier.tapes …

1. Climb Table Mountain

An absolute MUST do for anyone visiting Cape Town. Catch the cable car up to the top for a birds eye view of Cape Town City Bowl – one of the most breath-taking views in the world! For those of you feeling a little more active, you can also get to the top by foot. Yes, it may be a hell of a lot longer and more challenging but you’ll experience the beautiful mountain trails and spot incredible wildlife – trust us, it will make reaching the summit that much more rewarding!

2. Penguin spot on Boulders Beach

Get to know a few jackasses on Boulders Beach. No we’re not talking about the South African locals, but hundreds of penguins that live in a colony on the beach. These jackass penguins take their name from the sound they produce, similar to that of a jackass or donkey and attract over 60,000 visitors every year. They’re the only tuxedo dressed birds on the whole continent and there aren’t many other places in the world that offer such an awesome viewing point. Go say hey!

3. Go shark cage diving

This one is definitely for the adrenaline junkies, go face to face with the most dangerous creatures in the sea. Cape Town is arguably one of the best places in the world to go shark cage diving as pretty much a quarter of the world’s population can be found in the South African waters, 98 species to be precise. Most dive sessions cost around R1,100 about £62 which is well worth it – cheaper than most Australian dives. It’s a once in a lifetime experience and Cape Town is no better place for it!

OK so who exactly are what3words.com?

Who?
Basically these guys are on a mission to make the world a more efficient, less frustrating and safer place. How exactly are they doing that? They are addressing the world with a unique combination of just 3 words. So forget postcodes and co-ordinates, the whole world is mapped by 3mx3m square and each square (all 57 trillion of them) has been pre-allocated a fixed & unique 3 word address. Hence ‘Milky. Happier. Tapes.’ at the start of the video. Starting to make sense now?
what-3-words
Why though?
Because around 75{1e29904c885515873022ed5b62c6c7d923686363a219a3c356dc5ccea4ad6161} of the world is addressed inconsistently, parcels, letters aren’t being delivered, tourist attractions or places aren’t being found and people are getting lost. Three words give the world the ability to talk about precise locations as simply as possible.

Simple. As. That.
