Every time I meet new individuals and tell them the identify of my weblog, they say, oh, you should travel a lot.” Which I suppose I do travel more than many people, however that is not the purpose. For this, I blame Daniel Kalder and his guide ‘Lost Cosmonaut’ ( reviewed by DT right here ). Having learn it a number of years in the past, long before I had ever set foot within the Former Soviet Union, his description of the Kalymk capital conjured up images of an absurd wasteland on the sad periphery of Europe, trembling underneath the megalomania of a chess-loving, enemy-assassinating dictator whereas slowly disintegrating into the mud of the countless steppe surrounding it. I loved the e-book and its description of Kalymkia, and was intrigued by idea of a Buddhist enclave inside Europe which was obsessed with chess and had nothing of any consequence to supply the world. Though then an armchair desolationist as yet uninitiated to the fun of travel in the fringes of the Soviet empire, the ebook sparked my imagination and by no means light from my reminiscence.
